Maynard entered the Federal Duck Stamp contest again in 1951 and won with a pair of gadwalls. Still competing in black and white he concentrated on contrasting tones. Gadwalls, surface feeding ducks, leap vertically in the air, leaving a big splash which he knew would add action to the design.
